Is your menu vegan-friendly? The 10-point check

1. Do you have at least two vegan mains that are proper meals?Not a side salad or a plate of chips. They should have protein and feel like something worth paying for.
2. Do you have a vegan starter or small plate and a vegan dessert?Vegans want the full experience too, especially on a night out.
3. Are vegan dishes clearly labelled on your menu?A clear VE symbol, kept separate from vegetarian.
4. Does your menu show which dishes can easily be made vegan?Many vegans won't ask, so tell them.
5. Have you checked sauces, dressings, stocks and sides for hidden animal ingredients?Butter, honey, egg wash, fish sauce and meat stocks are the usual culprits.
6. Have you checked your bought-in products with your suppliers?Bread, buns, pastry, desserts and even some wines and beers can contain animal products.
7. Do you use separate utensils, boards or fryers for vegan dishes, or are you honest when you can't?Shared fryer oil or grills matter to most vegans.
8. Could every member of your team confidently answer “What's vegan here?”A confident answer builds trust straight away.
9. Is your full menu, with vegan labels, online?On your website and your Google Business Profile. Vegans check before they visit.
10. Do you tell people about your vegan options?On social media, on HappyCow or in local vegan groups.

What your score means

• 8 to 10: Vegan-friendly. You're in great shape. Make sure people know about it, and think about Veganuary specials.
• 5 to 7: Nearly there. A few small changes, usually labelling and staff knowledge, would make a big difference.
• 0 to 4: Missing out. Vegan customers, and the friends and family they eat with, are probably choosing somewhere else. The good news is that it's quick to fix.
